Here are the need to know steps to using your private medical insurance to meet your needs.

FAQs- "I have medical insurance and I need to find a therapist"

It can be daunting given all the small print to read through, and then finding a therapist who is registered to work with your insurer. Here are three steps to make the journey simple.

Step 1: Understand Your Insurance Coverage
Insurance policies can vary greatly in terms of the types of therapy and mental health services they cover. Key points to clarify include:
  • The number of therapy sessions covered per year (this can often be negotiated part way through sessions but most insurers set a number or a certain spend per individual)

  • Coverage for different types of therapy (individual, group, online)

  • Any specific qualifications or credentials therapists must have

Step 2: Find a Qualified Therapist
Your insurer will only agree to sessions with a therapist they have approved. Here are some strategies:
  • Provider Network: Most insurance plans have a network of preferred providers. These are professionals who have agreed to work with your insurance company at negotiated rates.

  • Therapist Directories: Use therapist directories that allow you to filter professionals by insurance provider. (e.g Psychology Today) This can be a quick way to find therapists who are likely to be covered by your plan.

  • Personal Recommendations: Sometimes, the best way to find a good therapist is through recommendations from trusted individuals who also share your insurance provider.

  • Check if the therapist is offering online and/or face to face and that works for your needs

Step 3: Verify Coverage Individually

Double-check your therapist is listed as a provider under your insurance. Before setting up your first appointment you will need an authorisation code from your insurer and the therapists provider number (if you found the therapists independently from the insurer). Ensure that there are no additional hidden costs that might be passed onto you.

Remember:

Most therapists will offer a free consultation prior to starting, so you can make sure you 'click' before agreeing to a set number of sessions. I am registered with AXA, Vitality, Aviva at present, contact me for more information
